The long heatwave and drought in China are posing a “serious threat” to the country’s autumn harvests, and the agriculture ministry warned in a notice posted on Tuesday that everything should be done to increase water availability.

The notification urged local governments to “dynamically adjust” scheduling plans and make efficient use of water in order to ensure supplies during a vital period for the autumn crop.

More rockets should be made available to seed clouds, and machinery and motorized wells can be deployed to transport water to areas that do not have their own sources. Replanting is also encouraged in areas where crops have been severely damaged.
