China warned on Monday that its armed forces would “not sit idly by” in the event that the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the United States visited Taiwan.
The most recent warning was delivered during a routine briefing given by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A trip to Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, by Pelosi, who is currently the “No. 3 official of the U.S. government” would “lead to egregious political impact” according to a statement made by a spokesperson for the Chinese government named Zhao Lijian.
Pelosi was scheduled to start her tour of four Asian countries on Monday in Singapore, despite the significant anticipation that she may risk the wrath of Beijing by also visiting self-ruled Taiwan. Pelosi will visit Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines during this trip.
