Despite the potential environmental consequences, France’s nuclear regulator issued a temporary waiver enabling five EDF (EDF.PA) power facilities to continue discharging hot water into rivers in order to keep electricity production running during the country’s heatwave.

According to the ASN watchdog, the waiver has been extended until September 11, and the move would entail a “strengthened monitoring programme” of the water environment, particularly of fish life.
