India’s health ministry said on Thursday that there were 7,240 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours. This is the highest number of new infections in one day since March 2.

Mumbai, the financial capital of India, has seen a rapid rise in cases. By the end of Wednesday, there were 1,765 new infections, which is more than 500 more than there were on Tuesday.

The country reported eight deaths from COVID-19, the ministry said, bringing the official death count to 524,723 on Thursday.
