Japan has requested Russia to restrict locations near disputed northern islands from military maneuvers set to begin in the country’s Far East in late August, according to a Japanese government spokeswoman. Japan claims the Russian-held southern Kuril islands, which Tokyo refers to as the Northern Territories, in a territorial dispute that goes back to the conclusion of WWII, when Soviet soldiers captured them from Japan.

“We lodged a firm representation that the Northern Territories should be excluded from the areas for the drills,” Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki said at a regular press briefing.
