The Financial Times reported that US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to visit Taiwan in August, citing six persons familiar with the situation.

The proposals come as Taiwan is under pressure from China, which considers democratically run Taiwan to be its own territory, and the topic is a source of contention between Beijing and Washington.

According to two persons familiar with the incident, there were disagreements inside the US government about whether Pelosi should visit Taiwan.

A request for comment from Pelosi’s office and the US State Department was not immediately returned by Reuters. The Taiwan embassy in the United States could not be contacted right away.
