Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, departed Taiwan on Wednesday after expressing support and extolling its democracy, leaving a trail of Chinese resentment over her short visit to the self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its own.

Pelosi’s team, which made an unannounced but highly observed stop in Taiwan late Tuesday following visits to Singapore and Malaysia, was set to continue her Asian trip with stops in South Korea and Japan.

Her jet took off from a Taipei airport at 6 p.m. (1000 GMT) local time.
