A cargo plane carrying eight people crashed late Saturday near Kavala in northern Greece, according to the fire department and state television.

According to state television ERT, the plane was an Antonov An-12 operated by a Ukrainian firm and going from Serbia to Jordan. Due to an engine malfunction, the pilot sought an emergency landing, but the aircraft’s communication was lost.

Video footage posted to ertnews.gr showed the airplane in flames descending quickly before collapsing in what appeared to be an explosion. The fire department was unable to establish the type of aircraft, although initial indications indicated that eight persons were on board.

It added in a statement that it had sent 15 firefighters and seven engines to put out the fire that had started following the incident. More rescuers were en route.

Although it was unclear what the aircraft’s cargo was, the special disaster response unit was also on the site.

“We are treating the cargo as dangerous material,” a fire department official stated.
