Russia’s defense ministry stated on Friday that Ukraine used HIMARS rockets developed in the United States to attack a jail in separatist-held territory, killing 40 Ukrainian prisoners of war and injuring 75 others.

Reuters was unable to confirm battlefield reports immediately. Ukraine did not respond quickly to Russia’s claims.

“A missile strike from the U.S.-made multiple launch rocket system (HIMARS) was carried out on a pre-trial detention center in the area of the settlement of Olenivka, where Ukrainian military prisoners of war, including fighters from the Azov battalion, are being held,” the Russian defense ministry said in its daily briefing.

According to Interfax, Russian-backed separatist leader Denis Pushilin stated that the prison, located in the frontline town of Olenivka, had 193 persons, with no foreigners among the captives.

Following their capitulation, several Ukrainian combatants, including some from the Azov battalion, were taken prisoner in Olenivka after Russia took control of Mariupol following a months-long siege of the Azovstal steel complex.
