Officials say six people were killed and around two dozen others were wounded in a shooting at a Fourth of July parade in the upscale Chicago neighborhood of Highland Park on Monday, as frantic onlookers fled the scene.

Officials said during a press conference that six people were murdered, 24 were injured, and a rifle was found from the site.

The city of Highland Park announced on its website that “Law enforcement agencies are searching for the suspect; evidence of a firearm has been recovered,” “Numerous law enforcement officers are responding and have secured a perimeter around downtown Highland Park.”

The incident comes while many Americans are still reeling from the May 24 massacre that murdered 19 schoolchildren and two instructors at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and the May 14 assault that killed 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York.
