The United States wants Taiwan to enjoy freedom and security indefinitely, and will not back down from that, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Wednesday, during a visit to Taipei that China harshly criticized.

While adhering to the “One China” policy, Pelosi said at a joint press conference with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen that “our solidarity with Taiwan is more important than ever.” The United States supports the status quo and does not want anything to happen to Taiwan by force, according to Pelosi.

When asked about the economic ramifications of her visit for Taiwan, Pelosi said that the United States’ chips legislation opened the way for improved business contacts between the United States and Taiwan.

Tsai said that Taiwan is committed to preserving the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, and that China’s military drills in response to Pelosi’s visit are an unwarranted reaction.
